The
SCIRT Project, has been stripped of state funding by the South
Carolina Legislature for the Fiscal Year starting
July 1, 2008.
As
a result of these cuts the SCIRT Project is no longer able to offer
a compendium of complete services.
You
will find links to what services continue to be available on the left
side of your screen.
The
most beneficial thing at this juncture is to continue to contact members
of your local Legislative delegation
with your concerns about the SCIRT Project state funding for
2009-2010.
If
you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Anita
Steichen-McDaniel, Interim SCAD Executive Director at: asteichen-mcdaniel@scadservices.org
The SCIRT
Project is a joint endeavor between the South Carolina Department of Education,
and is administered by the South
Carolina Association of the Deaf.
Although
there is a shortage of sign language interpreters nationwide, this
shortage has reached critical levels in South Carolina. The SCIRT
Project attempts to reduce this shortage by:
-
Recruiting students into attending an Interpreter Programs
-
Recruiting recent Interpreter Program graduates into
relocating to South Carolina
-
Recruiting certified interpreters into relocating to
South Carolina
-
Training South Carolina's practicing interpreters
-
Providing assessment opportunities for South Carolina
practicing interpreters
-
Providing general information regarding interpreters,
interpreting, and the rights and obligations in relation to
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals
The
SCIRT Project aims to achieve these goals through the management
of several components. To the left you will find links to the various
services as they relate to each component the SCIRT Project provides.
If
you have any comments or questions about the SCIRT Project or this website,

Through
recruitment, training, and general information, South Carolina
remains committed to providing quality services to the Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing,
interpreting, and hearing residents of the Palmetto State.
